After inbounding the ball, the small forward (SF) sets a solid backscreen for PF. PF sets up his defender with a v-cut, and breaks off the pick along the baseline looking for the lob pass from SG (Diagram B). Coaching Point: The SG should be instructed to dribble in position to get a better angle for the lob pass and to improve the timing of the pass. After inbounding the ball, SF breaks off a double screen from PG and PF and look for a pass for the quick jump-shot. Coaching Point: The emphasis should be placed on the quality of the screens. Page 11 Drill #2: Big Screens Little Objective: To safely inbound the ball using a box set. Description: In this drill, the ball is inbounded by the shooting guard (SG). The drill begins with the players positioned as shown in Diagram A. The post players begin the drill by crossing through the lane. As they cross, the power forward (PF) attempts to hinder the movement of the center's (C) defender.
C then cuts to the lane looking for a pass from PF. PF has the option of hitting C quickly, or passing cross court to PG, who looks inside to find C continuing across the lane as illustrated in Diagram C. If C cannot get the ball to PF breaking through the lane, he has the option to pass out to SF on the perimeter. Then, as shown in Diagram D, C can set a pick for SG, who pops out looking for the pass and a quick shot. If the shot is not open, a two-player game can take place between C and SG. Coaching Point: The PF should either hit C quickly off the screen or reverse the ball to PG immediately.
