In fact, his opponent had raised the game to a new level. Instead of the entire crew working onboard at once, she forced them to perform repairs in shifts. Each crew member was guarded by a pair of inmates—even for exterior repair jobs. Shackles were released only when absolutely necessary, such as for intricate engine work or when someone needed to squeeze through an access tunnel.
